What Happens After Your First Fertility Appointment?

Posted on March 30, 2026 by Inception Fertility

Your first fertility appointment is a big step — and for many patients, it comes after months or even years of questions, waiting, and uncertainty. While the initial visit often brings relief and clarity, it can also raise a new set of questions:

What happens next?
When do tests start?
How soon will we have a plan?
Are we expected to decide on treatment right away?

At Indiana Fertility Institute (IFI), the time after your first appointment is just as important as the visit itself. This next phase is focused on gathering information, understanding your fertility, and creating a plan that feels right for you.

Here’s what most patients can expect after their first fertility consultation.

Step 1: Reviewing Your Visit & Next Steps

After your appointment, your physician will outline recommended next steps based on your history, goals, and any prior testing you may have already completed.

This may include:

  • Ordering fertility testing

  • Requesting outside medical records

  • Referring you to additional evaluations (if needed)

  • Scheduling follow‑up appointments

Not everyone follows the same path — and that’s intentional. Fertility care is highly individualized.

Many patients are surprised to learn that the goal after the first visit is information, not immediate treatment.

Step 2: Fertility Testing & Evaluation

Most patients move next into diagnostic testing. Some tests are timed to your menstrual cycle, which means testing may take place over one or more weeks.

Common fertility tests may include:

For patients with ovaries:

  • Bloodwork to evaluate hormone levels and ovarian reserve

  • Ultrasound to assess the ovaries and uterus

  • Ovulation assessment, especially if cycles are irregular

For patients with sperm:

  • Semen analysis to evaluate sperm count, movement, and shape

Additional testing (if recommended):

  • Imaging of the uterus or fallopian tubes

  • Genetic carrier screening

  • Follow‑up hormone testing

Your care team will guide you through scheduling and timing so you know exactly what to expect.

Step 3: Insurance Review & Financial Guidance

Because Indiana does not have a mandated fertility insurance law, coverage can vary widely from one plan to another. This is why IFI places strong emphasis on financial clarity early in the process.

After your first visit:

  • Your insurance benefits will be reviewed (if applicable)

  • You’ll learn what testing or treatment may be covered

  • Out‑of‑pocket expectations will be discussed

  • Financing options may be reviewed, if needed

You’re never expected to navigate this alone — and you’re not required to make financial decisions before you’re ready.

Step 4: Reviewing Results & Creating a Plan

Once testing is complete, you’ll meet with your physician to review results and talk through what they mean — and just as importantly, what they don’t mean.

At this stage, you may:

  • Receive a specific diagnosis

  • Learn that results are within normal ranges

  • Be diagnosed with unexplained infertility (which is more common than many realize)

  • Discuss one or more treatment options

Possible next steps may include:

This is a collaborative conversation, not a commitment.

Step 5: Taking Time to Decide

One of the most important things to know: You do not have to decide everything immediately.

Some patients are ready to move forward quickly. Others need time to:

  • Process information

  • Consider financial or emotional factors

  • Talk with a partner

  • Reflect on what feels right

At IFI, there is space for thoughtful decision‑making. Your care team is here to support you — whether you’re ready now or need time.

Common Questions Patients Have After the First Visit

“Does this mean we’re starting treatment right away?”
Not necessarily. Many patients spend time in the evaluation phase before moving forward.

“What if my results are normal?”
Normal results are still valuable — they help guide next steps and rule out certain causes.

“What if we’re unsure about treatment?”
That’s okay. Your team is here to answer questions and revisit options when you’re ready.

“What if this feels overwhelming?”
That’s completely normal. Fertility care involves both information and emotion, and support is part of the process.

What This Phase Is Really About

The time after your first fertility appointment is about:

  • Gaining clarity

  • Reducing uncertainty

  • Understanding your options

  • Creating a plan that fits your life, not just a diagnosis

It’s the foundation for everything that comes next.

You’re Not Expected to Have All the Answers

If you’re newly navigating fertility care, know this: You don’t need to be an expert. You don’t need to know the “right” next step. You just need to keep asking questions.

At Indiana Fertility Institute, we’re here to guide you — one conversation, one test, and one decision at a time.
